Learn how to lose processed food, along with your weight

Athens — Lavonia Nowell believes perhaps the best way to lose weight and be healthier is to analyze what you eat.

With those beliefs, Nowell has decided to begin the Processed-Free Living support group in Athens.

The group will meet at the Living for the Brand Cowboy Church beginning June 12 and 13 at 6:30 p.m., as well as June 26 and 27 at 10 a.m. The group plans to continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., and the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 10 a.m.

Nowell, a Flint resident with ties to Athens, said her beliefs about proper intake of food began with the book, “The Science of Skinny,” by Dee McCaffrey. The author is also the founder of Processed-Free America.

Since Nowell has been on the processed-free diet, she has lost 38 pounds.

“It was just from getting off of refined sugar and refined flour,” she said. “There are good sugars that are not so refined.  Usually you have to go to a health food store to get Stevia, grown in South America and imported here.”

Nowell added that fried foods are best for a person’s health if fried in coconut oil.

“Two years ago, I dealt with severe digestive issues and pain,” she said. “The doctor said I should get off refined flour and refined sugar.  Since then, just by doing that, I have lost those pounds.”

Nowell said that she has only been on the Science of Skinny for two months, following that plan specifically. She said McCaffrey, who is an organic chemist, outlaws preservatives, additives, processed food, refined flour and refined sugar.

“I don’t look at a piece of cake like I used to,” Nowell said. “Does that mean I’m a purist?  No.  None of us are perfect.”

Nowell said the meetings that will begin in June will be free of charge, and will serve as a place for people to sample healthy foods, so they can taste different foods – different from the way they have been making them.
