A need that’s very easy to see

Greater Athens Lions Club collecting eyeglasses, related items on Saturday

ATHENS — The Greater Athens Lions Club is asking for used eyeglasses, lenses, glass cases and hearing aids for the annual Lions Club White Cane Day this Saturday.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Walmart (1405 E. Tyler St. in Athens).

Incoming President Mary Shyrock said there is a reason behind the event being called “White Cane Day.”

“They have to meet a certain criteria, and this particular one is called ‘White Cane’ because the blind used to use white canes, and they would walk with those across the street,” Shyrock said.

According to the Lions Club website, the eyeglass recycling program is one of its most popular activities during the year, and Shyrock said it is restarting the program.

“We have done this for five years with the other chapter and they quit letting us do it for a while,” Shyrock said. “They have let us start back up again and this is one of our first efforts as the Greater Athens club.”

The Greater Athens Lions Club plans to use the funds and items collected for glasses and vision testing for the needy citizens of Henderson County and Lone Star Eye Bank. The eye bank provides cornea implants and tissue all over the state.

Shyrock said 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Lions Club, which is also looking for new members.

“We want the public to make donations,” Shyrock said. “We meet once a month at Tilo's and we are getting our feet wet with the new club.”
