Cedar Creek Lake area on the move with car-related events

Special to the Review
The Athens Review

Athens — It’s the time of year that finds the Cedar Creek Lake Area on the move, with car-related events to please everyone, no matter the age or interest.

May 3-4 are the dates of the annual Cedar Creek Lake Car Show Poker Run (on wheels, not water), and the ever-popular Cedar Creek Lake Car Show & Kiwanis Krawfish Boil.

On the calendar for May 3 is the third annual Cedar Creek Lake Car Show Poker Run, and the whole community is invited to come join the fun. For only $10, everyone with transportation can participate, and buy one poker hand. Additional hands can be purchased for $10 each.

Visit all of the stops to be eligible for door prizes at the final stop. The special “Bonus” stop at the Mabank Independent School District  High School Car Show at the Junior High Campus will feature a special door-prize drawing.

Registration for the Poker Run will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at Comfort Suites Hotel Mabank. There will be five other stops to pick up cards, including the final stop at BsnR Pit Grill in Mabank. There’ll be a prize party at the Pit Grill, and some good deals to be had at the other stops, all Chamber of Commerce-member businesses.

In addition to the Comfort Suites, there’ll be stops at The Branding Iron Steakhouse, Solar Screen & Outdoor Products, Chili’s GBC, Cedar Creek Brewery, Mabank ISD Car Show, and BnR Pit Grill No. 1 in Mabank. Cash prizes and door prizes will be awarded at the party.

Poker Run Co-Chair Marty Mullins of TexasAbility LLC emphasized that you don’t have to have a hot rod or fancy wheels to participate.

“Just drive what you have and come join the fun,” he said.

Working with Mullins to organize the 2013 Poker Run is Becky Hepker/ Southside Bank GBC. Registration forms and more information are available at the chamber office.

Starting at 8 a.m. on May 4, hot rods, motorcycles, trucks, new Fords and Chevys, and people will start pouring into the Mabank Pavilion to start the 7th Annual Cedar Creek Lake Car Show & Kiwanis Krawfish Boil.

The chamber will have breakfast food at the concession, and the Chamber Grill Team will be getting the grill fired-up for burgers, while the Cedar Creek Lake Kiwanis Club volunteers will be starting to cook the delicious crawfish and all the trimmings.

The Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Car Show committee is pleased to welcome the Mabank ISD Education Foundation, another non-profit, back for the 3rd year.  The Foundation is making it easy for the public to have an opportunity to make a donation to the organization, just by taking a test spin in a new Ford.

Ford Motor Company is teaming again with Tri-County Ford, the Mabank Education Foundation and the Cedar Creek Lake Car Show for Drive One 4 UR School.

“This program raised $6,000 for the Education Foundation at the 2012 show, and we’re thrilled that Ford will be helping again, and it’s wonderful to welcome them back as a partner,” said CCLACC President, Jo Ann Hanstrom, who’s also a member of the MISDEF board of directors.

Volunteers will be on hand to help licensed drivers over the age of 18 fill out a short release form, and get you rolling in a new Ford.

Take the time to stop by and support the Mabank Education Foundation, as they raise money for grants to support the classroom teachers in unique and innovative programs that wouldn’t otherwise be funded.

Entry forms for the Car Show are available through the Chamber of Commerce office. There will be door prizes, T-shirts for all pre-registered entries, raffles and 50/50, plus something that’s new this year – the community’s very own Dino “Danger” Perelli to emcee, and keep the cruisin’ tunes going all day.

Registration for the show will start at 8 a.m.,  and judging will begin at 11 a.m. The awards will be presented at 3 p.m.  The Show is over when all of the awards have been handed out.

The cost to enter is $20, with the proceeds going to the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Cedar Creek Kiwanis Club will be serving crawfish (or “mud bugs,” if you prefer) with all the trimmings.  For those folks who don’t care for the crawfish experience, the Chamber of Commerce Grill Team will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers.

Besides the grill orders, other concession food and drinks will be available, and souvenir T-shirts and other items will be on sale throughout the day. The crawfish will be served from about 10:30 a.m. until  all is gone. Proceeds from the sale of the crawfish benefit the Kiwanis Club and funds their programs for local kids.

Visitors to the Car Show will also have an opportunity to take a look at new Chevrolets and Buicks from Teague Chevrolet and Fords from Tri-County Ford, plus some sponsor vendors.

Mark your calendar today so you won’t miss out on this day of family fun. Admission is free. There will be a charge for food, beverages and souvenirs.
