The Athens Review
Relay for Life teams have been busy raising money for the American Cancer Society. Mark your calender for May 10.
The American Cancer Fundraiser Relay For Life will be held at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex on State Highway 31 in Athens. The theme this year will be “Under The Sea.” This will be a celebration of survivorship and remembrance of those who lost their battle with cancer. The event will last for 12 hours from 7 p.m., Friday, to 7 a.m., Saturday morning.
The history of Relay for Life starts in May 1985. Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern – cancer.
A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay for Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer.
The annual event is not only a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, it also brings awareness to the fight against cancer.
While the American Cancer Society is making progress toward a future without cancer, only with dedication and fundraising efforts can the world's largest fight for more birthdays continue.
During a Relay event, participants and survivors celebrate what they've overcome during the Survivors Lap. Anyone who has ever heard the words, “You have cancer,” can walk in the survivor walk.
The Luminaries will be lit after sundown honoring those with cancer. Luminaries can be purchased for $5 at the event, website www.relayforlife.org/hendersoncotx.
The Fight Back Ceremony inspires Relay participants to take tangible action against a disease that has taken too much.
There will be a survivor dinner, beginning at 5:30 the night of the relay. For information on the dinner, and to register as a survivor, contact Kristi Key at firstname.lastname@example.org or 903-340-0845.
"We still need participants and donations," said Trena Miers, event chairperson. "It's a fun family event where we celebrate the survivors."
