Athens — The Athens Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are working to make 2010 a big year, according to Chamber Chairman Michael “Mo” Morrison.
He spoke at the chamber’s March membership luncheon on Wednesday at the Athens Country Club.
“Your board developed a very aggressive plan for 2010,” Morrison said.
He said the board planned more than 20 programs at its last meeting to increase commerce in Athens.
“The board is very dedicated to the revitalization of the heart of downtown Athens,” Morrison said. “Most of our challenges are growing pains, not problems.”
He said the board is also undertaking an effort to bring more sporting events and venues to town.
Morrison said the board expects to fill the chamber’s president position within the next month. He said Interim Director Beth Flach and the chamber’s staff have been working diligently to keep the organization on track.
“Even though the search is ongoing, the chamber is still active,” he said.
Morrison cited the chamber’s annual events, including the upcoming 25th Annual Henderson County PRCA Stampede Rodeo, Farm and Ranch Tour. He said the Taste of Home Cooking Show — held on March 4 — was a success, partly due to chamber ambassadors.
Ambassadors volunteer their time to support local businesses, and make chamber events a success, according to Morrison.
The chamber also presented several awards to its teachers, business and Ambassador of the Month. The Business of the Month award was given to Rennie Brigman, of Mary Kay Cosmetics.
The chamber’s Ambassador of the Month was awarded to Lisa Pelligra.
The Teachers of the Month were: Keishia Garrett, Early Childhood Center; Stephanie Steed, South Athens Elementary School; Chrystal Smith, Bel Air Elementary School; Sendy Fletcher, Athens Intermediate School; Lisa Milligan, Athens Middle School; Debbie Baker, Athens High School; and Cheryl Jones, Athens Operation Center.
