Athens — The line-up card will be unusually full for Athens city and school board voters in May.

The filing deadline passed Monday afternoon, and left contested races for two of the three available Athens City Council seats, and all three of the Athens Independent School District Board of Trustees places.

In the city council races, Carol Barton of Place 2 will be unopposed for another term.

Place 3 will feature Aubrey Jones, who has been serving out Carroll Maberry’s unexpired term, and also Tony Kalawe.

Place 4 incumbent Elaine Jenkins has drawn an opponent. Michael Lenz filed for the office Monday afternoon.

Athens Independent School District Place 5 Trustee Raymond Williams, a member since 2007, will be challenged by Paul Harrup.

In Place 6, former board president, David Freeman, is opposed by former trustee Larry West.

West attempted to regain a seat by challenging Jennie Mahmoud in 2008. Mahmoud won re-election by 1,019 to 675 count.

Bob Spears has also drawn an opponent in Place 7. Evelyn Kindred will attempt to unseat Spears, who has served on the board since 2001.

Anyone who wishes to vote in the May 8 election must be registered by April 8. Early balloting begins April 26, and runs through May 4.
