Big day in Athens almost here

Packed Saturday offers taste of fall, food and fun

From Staff Reports

Looking for something to do Saturday? No need to leave Athens.

The East Texas Arboretum’s Octoberfest Fall Festival (1601 Patterson Road) will begin at 9:30 a.m. that day, kicking off a day full of events for the family to enjoy.

“We’re ready to go,” Arboretum Executive Director Teresa Glasgow said. “It’s going to be a great day.”

The Fall Festival, which is entering its third year, is free and will include activities throughout the day. The festival will last until 5 p.m.

While folks are having fall fun, others will be cooking their hearts out during the Uncle Fletch Hamburger Cook-off and the Black-Eyed Pea Cook-off. Both will be held during the Fall Festival.

Organizers are hoping for a big turnout. After all, Athens is home to the hamburger and the black-eyed pea.

The BEP will begin at 10 a.m. and last until noon. A variety of colorful dishes are sure to hit the judge’s tables for the contest. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top culinary creations.

At the same time, the best grillers the area has to offer will be competing in the hamburger cook-off. Set up can begin today (ending at 6 p.m.) for teams and individuals in front of the Wofford House. Cooks will then fire up their grills at 10 a.m. Saturday for the contest, and judging begins at noon. A people’s choice award will also be given for the best decorated booth.

Saturday night, the 11th Annual Henderson County 2008 Cattle Baron’s Ball will begin at 7 p.m. at Henderson County Fairpark Complex. Tickets are $75 for general admission and $100 for reserved seating. Proceeds will benefit the Henderson County American Cancer Society.

Along with entertainment from Keith Mitchell, there will be a riderless horse ceremony and unique auction items that are sure to bring top dollar.

For more information about the Cattle Baron’s Ball, contact Henderson County American Cancer Society president and Cattle Baron’s Ball chairman Janice Ellis at 214-533-7150.
