Sheriff’s son arrested on drug charge

Former Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Investigator booked into county jail, bond set at $30,000

By Rich Flowers News Editor

A former Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Investigator was arrested Tuesday in Payne Springs on a drug charge.

Bryan Ray Nutt was booked into the Henderson County Jail for possession of less than one gram of a controlled substance, a state jail felony.

Precinct 6 Justice of the Peace Milton Adams set $30,000 bond on the possession charge, plus an additional $420 for an existing warrant issued by the Kaufman Police Department.

Nutt, who is the son of Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt, was then transported to the Navarro County Jail for safety reasons.

HCSO reports said Deputy Kendall Wellman stopped Nutt’s vehicle at about 8:35 p.m. on State Highway 198 for a routine traffic violation.

Dispatch informed Wellman that Nutt was wanted on an outstanding warrant from the Kaufman Police Department for allowing his dog to run at large.

Wellman placed Nutt under arrest, and found him to be in possession of a substance that appeared to the officer to be methamphetamine.

Deputies Richard Miller and Josh Rickman were dispatched to the scene to aid in the arrest. Wellman transported Nutt to jail.

Nutt served as a sheriff’s department investigator until he began experiencing drug problems. He was first arrested in 2002 fraudulently obtaining prescription drugs. After Nutt failed court-ordered drug tests, 3rd District Court Judge Jim Parsons ordered Nutt’s bond revoked in September, 2003.

In 2005, in a hearing on a motion to revoke community supervision, Nutt pled true to all counts of alleged violations, and was sentenced to five years in the Texas Department of Corrections State Jail Division, minus eight months already served.
