MDA Rodeo called a success

The dust has settled and officials with the 2006 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association MDA Benefit Rodeo are satisfied as pigs in slop.

The annual event was held last weekend at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex in Athens.

“Everything went off without a hitch,” event coordinator Tonya Hannigan said.

A portion of the rodeo’s proceeds will directly benefit the more than 400 East Texas families that have been affected by some form of muscular dystrophy — a group of hereditary muscle-destroying disorders, which medical officials say varies in inheritance patterns, age onset, initial muscles attacked and the rate of progression.

Hannigan said estimates on how much was raised for MDA won’t be released until later this week.

“We will present the money to MDA on the telethon,” she said.

Officials said crowd numbers were right on target as well.

“We had a pretty good crowd Friday, but I would have liked to see more people out on Saturday.”

County singer Pat Green was featured on Friday and Restless Heart was live in concert on Saturday.

“We sell out every time Pat Green is here,” Hannigan said in an earlier interview.
