Agencies respond to early morning brawl

From Staff Reports

Several Cedar Creek Lake area law enforcement agencies responded to a weekend brawl near Gun Barrel City after shots were fired.

Henderson County Sheriff’s Department reports stated dispatch received a call at 2:27 a.m. Sunday that a large fight was underway on County Road 2426. An altercation at a party, with about 70 to 80 in attendance escalated into a physical confrontation between some of those present. At least four shots were fired during the altercation, HCSO reports stated.

During the fight, a 19-year-old Tool man was struck and rendered unconscious and sent to East Texas Medical Center, Gun Barrel City. The unidentified assailant fled the scene before officers arrived, HCSO report stated.

Deputies Robert Powers, Kendell Wellman, Sgt. Brad Gray and Investigator Bryan Tower were dispatched to the fight, assisted by police officers from the Eustace, Gun Barrel City, Tool and Seven Points departments.

When officers arrived, about 40 people were still at the scene. One of the men, Kenneth Leonard Givens, 23, was present and had allegedly fired shots during the altercation. Officers found a 40 caliber handgun in Givens’ vehicle.

Givens was booked into the Henderson County Jail on prior warrants for traffic violations.

He was later released, but could face additional charges.

Tower is working the case. Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said the department anticipates filing additional charges in relation to the incident for assault causing bodily injury and making alcohol available to a minor.
