WFD looking for stolen gloves

By Rich Flowers News Editor

The Westside Fire Department is asking the public to keep a look-out for nearly two dozen of its gloves, which were stolen Monday night.

WFD is located on Farm-to-Market Road 315, south of Chandler.

The area has been hit by several burglaries recently. On Monday night burglars hit the residence of a firefighter in the Forrest Grove subdivision who had taken 23 pairs of the special gloves home to put identification on them. The replacement cost of the gloves is about $2,000.

WFD Chief Doug Nicholson hopes someone will notice the gloves

“We got to looking around and found one of the empty boxes right down from his house,” he said. “We got talking to his neighbors and their houses got hit that night also.”

Nicholson wants to get the word out about the stolen gloves so the public can report anyone trying to sell or use them.

“I’ve filed a report with the (Henderson County) Sheriff’s Department,” he said. “I hope they catch who did it. It was probably kids. I don’t know for sure.”

The gloves are a style that is not readily available here, Nicholson said.

“The closest department that uses them is up on the other side of Dallas,” he said.

The WFD currently has two types of gloves, Nicholson explained. One kind is used for fighting structural fires and the other is better for working with cars.

“These gloves are supposed to be good for fighting both,” Nicholson said. “That way you don’t have to have two sets.”

The WFD is funded mostly by donations from the public and the occasional grant. Nicholson doesn’t want to see $2,000 worth of equipment go out the window.

“I’m going to re-order the gloves, because we’ve got to have them,” he said. “But, whoever stole them, if they get caught, they ought to get in trouble.”
