Funeral services for Edgar McTerry “Mack” Cumbie, 87, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home of Athens.
The popular former bailiff for County Court-at-Law Judge Matt Livingston and former circulation manager at the Athens Daily Review died Friday.
Visitation will be Tuesday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home (842 SE Loop 7).
Following Wednesday’s services, burial will be at Davis Cemetery.
Cumbie followed in the footsteps of his father serving as a court bailiff. He worked in Livingston’s court — at the time the county’s only court-at-law — for several years.
He was also a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Athens, where he met his first wife, Jeana.
The LaPoynor High School graduate also served his country in the U.S. Army. He was drafted into the Army late in 1944 and was assigned to the 99th Infantry Division in Europe as a replacement mortar squad member following the Battle of the Bulge.
For the next six months of 1945 he was part of the American offensive that broke out of Belgium, crossed the Rhine River by capturing the bridge at Remagen and drove on into Germany until V-E Day in June.
