Athens to graduate 203 in Friday ceremony

The Athens High School Class of 2008 will hold commencement ceremonies Friday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Bruce Field. The class will graduate 203 students.

Valedictorian is Shelby Comito, who will graduate with a 4.0 GPA (103.57). Comito is the daughter of Joe and Rachelle Comito. She ranked first in her class throughout her high school career. She received the Gold Award in the Girl Scouts of America by creating a teen resource center at the Family Peace Project.

Comito is president of National Honor Society, named student of the year in Theater I, Theater II, Pre-AP Algebra II, Pre-AP English II and AP English III. She placed second in the One-act Play UIL State Competition. She was a regional qualifier in ready writing, cross country individual and cross country team. Comito was awarded the “Supernova Personality” theater award her junior year. She also won the All Texas Academic Team Award from the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. Comito will be attending the University of Texas at Austin, studying Liberal Arts in the Plan II Honors Program.

Madalyn Smith, daughter of Liz Smith of Athens and James Smith of Dallas, will graduate with a 4.0 GPA. Smith is the secretary of the Athens High School National Honor Society and Key Club. She is an active member of the Swim and Dive team and Speech and Drama club. Madalyn is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has attended RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) as both a junior camper and a senior counselor. She is also an active member of Ambassadors, a “big sister” program.

Madalyn has earned 26 credit hours by taking dual-credit and concurrent classes at Trinity Valley Community College and was inducted into their honor society — Phi Theta Kappa — last fall. In the fall she will be attending the University of North Texas in Denton to major is Speech Language Pathology/Audiology and minor in Applied Behavior Analysis.
