A female teen-ager injured near the end of the 23rd Annual Elder Dodge Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Henderson County Stampede on Saturday night is said to be recovering in an intensive care unit.
Rodeo Committee Chairman Charla Hendrix said the teen — whose name has not been released — is being treated at East Texas Medical Center Tyler. Her condition is unknown.
The teen is an Athens resident.
She had just completed the In-County Barrel Racing course and left the open arena toward the animal stalls when she was injured. About a minute after she left the sight of the arena crowd, the rodeo announcer, Andy Stewart, called for paramedics over the public address system.
Stewart then announced to the audience that the rider had been injured.
Stewart later said another horse ran into the one the teen was riding. After being bucked off the horse, he said, the animal fell on top of her.
Stewart later announced the teen had been taken to a Tyler hospital by helicopter.
