Cross Roads man arrested for firing gun inside house

Henderson County Sheriff’s Department deputies involved in wreck on way to scene

By Rich Flowers

A Cross Roads area man was arrested Sunday after a disturbance at his residence in which shots were fired.

No one was injured in the gunfire, Henderson County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Pat McWilliams said. A deputy responding to the call also escaped injury after a wreck involving his patrol car while on his way to the scene.

Richard Dean Hulshouser, 43, was booked into Henderson County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to police reports.

At about 10:45 a.m., dispatchers received a 911 call in reference to a subject shooting inside his residence on County Road 1213 off State Highway 59 between Shady Oaks and Cross Roads.

“He was shooting up the inside of the house. He shot through the windows and at the doors,” McWilliams said.

Deputy Brady McGhee was assigned the call with Deputy Bryan Miers as backup, McWilliams said. As the units traveled south on Farm-to-Market Road 3441 — with McGhee in the lead — his vehicle slowed to turn left. Miers, thinking McGhee was slowing to allow him to pass, attempted to go around. To avoid a collision with McGhee, Miers took evasive action and ran off the road and into a chain link fence at the Cross Roads Independent School District building, McWilliams said.

Miers left his vehicle and joined McGhee in his squad car as they proceeded to the call. When they arrived at the residence, McWilliams said, the deputies found that Hulshouser had fled the residence into nearby woods. McGhee, assisted by other deputies, located Hulshouser and took him into custody without incident.

Texas Highway Patrol Troopers James Martin and R.D. Rhodes investigated the fleet accident involving the sheriff’s department vehicle.
