The filing deadline for the May 9 city and school board elections passed Monday with few contested races in Henderson County.
The City of Athens will not require an election because only the incumbents, Mayor Randy Daniel and Councilman Jerry Don Vaught filed for the two available seats.
Since the law allowing entities without a contested race to cancel elections went into effect in 1996, Athens has had few contested municipal races. Elections were canceled in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.
The Athens Independent School District Board of Trustees will have one contested seat. In Place 3, Ginger Kirk has drawn a challenge from Will Davies. Rob Risko will be unopposed for another term in Place 4.
The Malakoff mayoral race will have three trying for the spot. The candidates are John Shumate, Dennis Haws and Ricky Layne Baker. Mayor Pat Isaacson resigned last November stating it was time for her to move on.
Mayor Pro-Tem Tim Trimble, who assumed the duties of the mayor while the seat was vacant, is seeking another term on the council, as is Jeanette King. Trimble and King were the top two vote-getters two years ago and are the lone candidates for the two seats in 2009.
The race for city council in Trinidad has drawn a crowded field. Five candidates are seeking seats: Gary Brett, Mary E. Johnston, Susan Latham, John Lewis and Linda Brock. The mayors race there is also contested with incumbent Mike Black facing Tamra Brickey.
Malakoff ISD has three candidates seeking one of two available seats. Candidates are incumbents Rick Vieregge and Gary Woolverton and challenger Pat Smith.

Athens Mayor Randy Daniel and Councilman Jerry Don Vaught have filed for new terms.
Berryville Mayor Roy Brown has filed. Incumbents Grace Donnelly, Sue Morgan and Rusty Wooten have filed for three council seats.
Brownsboro Incumbents Randall Clayton and Len Vest have filed for the two council seats, while Ronny Harris will serve another term as mayor.
Caney City Two council seats are available, with Ron Welch the lone filer. There are no candidates for the open mayors office.
Chandler Joy Rains has filed for mayor. Marshall Crawford Jr. Barbara Reeves and Bobby Lankford have filed for the two available council seats.
Enchanted Oaks Don Warner has filed for mayor. Zelma Montgomery has entered for one of the council seats. So far, there are no candidates for the remaining council positions.
Eustace There are two filings for mayor, Mayor Laura Ward and challenger Donald Siegel. Incumbents Lisa Roberts and Karyn Mullen are filed for city council, as are Sherry Burkett and Jack Wallace. There are three open seats.
Gun Barrel City Marvin Pace has filed in Place 1 which represents the eastern part of the city. Curtis Webster has filed in Place 3, which represents the west. Marty Goss has filed for the Place 5 at large seat.
Log Cabin Billy Goodwyn has filed for re-election as mayor. There are four candidates for the two council seats: Larry Nolan, Steve Sutton, Charles Hayes and Tom Garrett.
Malakoff For mayor, John Shumate, Dennis Haws and Ricky Layne Baker Jr have filed. Tim Trimble and Jeanette King are seeking re-election to one of two council seats.
Payne Springs Michael McDonald, Linda Carr, Steve Coleman and Ethyl Hagin are seeking the three seats.
Seven Points Five candidates are vying for three seats, Tommy Taylor, Michael Lowe, Bubba Powell, Wanda Lee Nichols and Tony Richards.
Star Harbor - Oliver Murray, O.R. Purdue and Bob Scible are filed for the three available seats
Tool Mike Black is seeking another term as mayor and has drawn Larry D. Estes as a challenger. Incumbents Leland Pitts and Nathan Reader have filed the two council seats. Dennis Condage has also filed for the council.
Trinidad Jason Tatom has filed for mayor along with Larry D. Estes. Five candidates have filed for the two council seats: Gary Brett Norman, Mary E. Johnston, Susan Latham, John Lewis and Linda Brock.
School board filings include.
Athens- Place 4 incumbent Ginger Kirk has drawn a challenge from Will Davies. Rob Risko will be unopposed for another term in Place 4.
Brownsboro - There are six candidates for the two seats now held by Bobby Teague and Dusty Wise. In addition to the incumbents the candidates are Jeffery Wood, Luke Rains, Brian Bersano and Danny Wilson.
Eustace - Sonny Hodge has filed in Place 1, Diane Russ in Place 6.
La Poynor - Place 6 trustee Keith Bristow has drawn opposition from Patrick DeBusk and Steven Simmons. Place 7 filers are Steve Handley and Stan McCurley.
Malakoff - There are two seats available. Incumbents Rick Vieregge and Gary Woolverton have filed for re-election with Pat Smith challenging.
Murchison -Two seats are available with Sheryl Smith and Kevin Head the candidates.
Citizens who have not registered to vote must sign up by April 9. Early balloting will begin April 27 and conclude the Tuesday before election day, May 5.
Trinidad - Eric Airhart and Jay Tart are filed for the two three year seats. Ricky Stansfield has entered for a two year, unexpired term. There were no candidates for an unexpired one year term.
