No fatalities in head-on collision
Four people escaped serious injury in a head-on two-vehicle crash in Malakoff Tuesday.
The collision was on State Highway 198 about a mile north of State Highway 31, Malakoff Police reports said.
The Henderson County Sheriff’s Department received the 9-1-1 call reporting the wreck at 5:30 p.m., just about nightfall.
Malakoff Police Chief Billy Mitchell said the crash occurred when a southbound Chevrolet Blazer driven by 37-year-old Ricky Davis of Malakoff failed to maintain a single lane, and moved into oncoming traffic. The Blazer struck the front of an Isuzu Rodeo, driven by Diana Summerall, 47, of Malakoff.
The collision did major damage to both vehicles, and left Davis trapped in the Blazer.
The Malakoff Volunteer Fire Department was first responder on the scene, and began freeing Davis from the wreckage.
Fire Departments from Caney City and Trinidad were summoned to the scene to join in the rescue effort. The Trinidad Police Department was also called to help with traffic control.
Davis and Summerall were transported by EMS to East Texas Medical Center. Two 11 year-old children, passengers in the Isuzu were also taken for treatment. The four sustained non-incapacitating injuries, Mitchell said.
The wreck snarled traffic on the two-lane road to a stop. Police and rescue personnel were at the location for about two hours before the roadway was cleared.

Church construction continues
Above, the Rev. Leon Wallace of Faith Church views the base of the steeple which was salvaged after his church was one of three in Athens which fell victim to arsonists in January. The steeple sits in front of a new church building being constructed by Cooper Plastering. The new building is estimated to have a worth of about $500,000 when completed.
