Central business district plan focuses on unique character of Athens, other elements
The City of Athens is looking to put new life into the Athens downtown square.
City Administrator Pam Burton stated in a press release that the Athens City Council of the City of Athens has commissioned a Downtown Revitalization Study with SEC Planning, LLC to will establish a master plan for the central business district.
“This study is made possible by a grant from the Ginger Murchison Foundation and will focus on land use, natural features, areas of interest that contribute to the unique character of Athens, architectural elements and design character, areas for improvement or preservation, existing parking and street scape conditions,” she stated in the release. “The consultant will explore alternatives for overall downtown design theme and prepare preliminary sketches that illustrate the design theme concepts.”
Burton said after the consultant completes preliminary plans, a public workshop will be held to get input from the community.
“After the first of the year, the city will coordinate a public workshop which will include the participation of community groups, business owners, residents and stakeholders,” Burton stated in the release. “The consultant will work with the community to define issues, concerns, challenges, opportunities and a vision for the future.”
She said the council and city staff are inviting the community will get on board for the project.
“It’s a very exciting project and we are looking forward to working with everyone on it,” Burton said.
