AMS to give public performance of ‘Iris’

By Angela Weatherford Associate Editor

Athens Middle School drama teacher Margaret Rollins is hoping a play she fell in love with will lead to a first place finish at One Act Play competition.

“Still Life with Iris” is a dramatic children’s play, Rollins said. Her middle school students will compete before the University Interscholastic League judges Saturday in Palestine, but the cast wants the public to watch first.

A public performance will be held Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at the AMS Cafeteria. The cost of admission will be $3 for students and $5 for adults.

“This is a fantasy adventure about a young girl’s search for home,” Rollins said. “This play will appeal to all ages.”

The play is set in the land of Nocturno and Great Island, and filled with characters in intricate costumes, Rollins said.

“The characters keep their memories in on their coat, and as the play progresses they lose their coats and memories,” she said.

The play is currently being performed in Chicago and by several schools as a one-act play.

“It’s a tough piece of literature,” Rollins said. “(The students) are doing a good job with it, and I think they are having fun with it.”
