Shop Local...Shop Athens!

Athens — As we all know the Christmas season is upon us, and we often don’t appreciate the opportunities we have in our own backyard. It’s the “grass is always greener” syndrome and it happens to all of us at one time or another.

This year, during the holiday shopping season, I hope the people of our community will stop to consider all of the great shopping opportunities we have locally.

It’s surprising how many people will hit the road to brave the crowds at the malls when they do their Christmas shopping. It’s also surprising to see how often they come home with purchases that could have been made without ever making that long, hectic drive.

Sometimes it’s simply a force of habit, but it’s a habit that needs to be broken.

We at the Athens Daily Review have long been advocates for shopping locally and supporting the businesses that do so much for our community. Local purchases mean local tax dollars and income for the people who live and work here.

Athens, in particular, is in the middle of a long-term effort to bring more retail shopping opportunities to this city. And yet, there are many shopping opportunities already here, that more of us should take advantage of.

We understand that there are times, when it’s simply not possible to purchase a certain item without traveling to get it. But our first inclination should be to seek it out here at home. You just might be surprised at what can be found by doing business with local folks. And often, if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they can get it.

That’s one of the great things about doing business with friends and neighbors. Personal service is alive and well in our community. For many of us, Christmas shopping is a necessary chore, but it can be a lot more enjoyable when done with folks who routinely go the extra mile for their customers. There are a lot of those folks here in our community.

And consider that local businesses are the ones who add so much to our quality of life. They volunteer their time and money to local charities and events throughout the year.

If not for them, it would be a very different community that we live in.

Everything from the local festivals to youth sports along with so much more benefits from the efforts of local business people. They deserve our support year round and especially during the holiday shopping season that so many retailers depend on.

Please take the time this year to discover some of the outstanding shopping opportunities available locally. It’s a lot more convenient than joining the madness and you’ll be doing your part to contribute to the local economy not to mention save a little on gas.

You can find many of these great holiday deals advertised in the pages of the Athens Daily Review, the hc your community magazine and right here on this very page, so be sure to tell them you saw it here. After all we’re a hometown business, too.

Don’t miss the chance to make your shopping experience the best it can be, while supporting your community at the same time. Do yourself a favor and shop locally.
