ATHENS — Fast action seems to have saved the building at the First Church of the Nazarene where firefighters responded en masse on Wednesday morning.
Information is still sketchy, but the fire is believed to started on a stage inside the church. Flames were not visible from the outside of the building, which was intact. Firefighters were still working through the building to determine exact cause and extent of damage.
The church's senior pastor, the Rev. J. Micheal Cash, said he heard an alarm from his neighboring parsonage and went to check on the building when he discovered smoke. Firefighters from Athens, Brownsboro and Payne Springs hurried to the scene.
