ATHENS — The Athens Police Department is investigating burglaries reported less than an hour apart late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Assistant Chief of Police Rodney Williams said the first call came in at 11:58 p.m. from an alarm company alerting police to a break-in at Del Norte grocery store on West Tyler Street. Officer Josh Beaty spoke to the store owner and learned that the front window had been broken out. The only items missing were two donation boxes that contained an unknown amount of cash.

According to police reports, an alarm sounded at 12:34 at an Exxon station on East Tyler Street. Officer Wesley Hoover responded to the burglary-in-progress and saw that the glass front door was broken out, but the intruder was gone. An undisclosed amount of cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes were missing from the store.

Williams said APD had no leads in the burglary as of Wednesday afternoon.

The case has been turned over to Detective Corporal James Bonnette for further investigation.
