CORSICANA —
Kenneth Eugene Wheeler of Malakoff was accidentally killed Wednesday at the Corsicana Landfill when he reached into the back of a garbage truck that was closing.
The man was pronounced dead at 2:53 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Vicki Gray.
He worked for Clean Sweep Trash Service in Malakoff.
“They’d already unloaded the dump truck, and the other man was putting it back down and for some reason the guy reached back into the truck. They don’t know why. It was just a bad accident,” Gray said. “They’d already finished unloading it and the guy reached back in there for something.”
The man was caught on the clamshell mechanism on a trash truck, not the compactor, explained Assistant Police Chief Ronny McGaha.
“He got caught between that and the truck,” he said. “We had a witness that worked for the city saw the whole thing.”
The company is an independent trash hauler that dumps at the Corsicana landfill, according to Connie Standridge, city manager.
“It was a third-party accident,” Standridge said, meaning it didn’t involve a city employee.
