AUSTIN — Six schools have been selected as winners of the “Texas Public Schools Rock!” student video contest sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). The videos, posted at tasb.org, illustrate the value of public education and emphasize the many positive aspects of Texas public schools.
The contest was open to all Texas elementary and secondary public school students, and winners were selected in three categories: elementary school, middle/junior high school, and high school. First-place prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the following school districts later this spring for use in the students’ classroom or campus:

Jess Harben Elementary School, Richardson ISD

Malakoff Middle School, Malakoff ISD

Guthrie High School, Guthrie CSD
A second-place prize of $2,500 will be given to:

Northside Elementary School, DeSoto ISD

North Shore Middle School, Galena Park ISD

Jersey Village High School, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
“With so many excellent entries, the final choices were extremely difficult. We are thrilled that students from all over the state showcased their creativity and enthusiasm for the great things going on in their districts. These winning entries help explain why local schools deserve the support of their communities and appropriate funding from the state,” said Viola Garcia, TASB president. “Our students’ voices underscore why all Texans should be proud of their public schools,” she said.
In addition, a Class Favorite in each of the three categories was chosen based on the videos most viewed by visitors to TASB’s Web Site. These winners receive no monetary prize but may be included among the videos displayed statewide at various TASB events:

In the first-ever video contest sponsored by TASB, students were asked to tell what makes their school exceptional, highlight excellent programs, or explain how funding cuts of the last legislative session affected their district. All entries can be viewed on the TASB Web Site.
