Athens —
Law officers brought a peaceful end to a potentially dangerous situation Sunday when a man who barricaded himself into Athens Army Navy Pawn Shop surrendered to authorities.
The Athens Police Department was assisted by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office tactical team in getting 19-year-old Anthony Louis Ray of Athens to come out of the store at 704 W. Corsicana Street.
Ray was charged with burglary of a building, possession of a firearm by a felon, theft of a firearm and failure to identify himself to authorities. Total bond on those charges was $25,000. He was also charged with three counts of bond forfeiture for obstruction of justice, aggravated assault and robbery. Total bond on those counts was $300,000.
APD Lt. Michael Davis said officers responded to a possible break-in at 3:47 a.m. Officers arrived at the pawn shop and saw a man throwing firearms out of the door. When the intruder became aware of the police, he barricaded himself in the store.
Faced with a burglar with access to multiple firearms, APD contacted the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office for the tactical unit and a negotiator.
“The officers surrounded the building and tried to get him to come out peacefully,” Davis said. “It worked out great.”
HCSO Investigator Michael Teal contacted the intruder and persuaded him to leave the building about three hours later.
Davis said Ray was armed when he left the building, but gave up without any violence.
