Palestine police look for help in solving 2009 murder

PALESTINE — Palestine police are seeking the public's help in the December 2009 murder of a 61-year-old local resident who was found dead inside his Palestine residence.

Virgie C. Spurlock, 61, was discovered deceased inside his local residence at 712 Head St. on Dec. 6, 2009.

An autopsy showed Spurlock, who served in the U.S. military and attended Palestine schools, died as a result of "blunt force trauma," according to Palestine Police Det. James Muniz.

"The Palestine Police Department is still continuing to investigate the murder of Virgie C. Spurlock," Muniz said Friday. "We've exhausted most of our leads. We're still seeking help from the public."

James Earl Jackson Jr., 24, of Palestine was arrested almost two weeks after Spurlock's murder and charged with failing to report a felony involving serious bodily injury or death, police have said.

Police have said Jackson admitted to being present when Spurlock was killed inside his residence, telling investigators he witnessed the man's murder.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call Muniz at (903) 731-8479.

Also, anyone providing information leading to the arrest of a suspect in Spurlock's murder may be eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000 from Anderson County Crimestoppers.

Crimestoppers may be contacted at (903) 729-TIPS (8477).
