State confirms Navarro County rabies case

Corsicana —

Corsicana — Rogers Animal Hospital in Corsicana has reported a confirmed case of canine rabies in an animal from the Blooming Grove area.

The animal, a small dog, had been brought in for treatment of a possible neurological problem when the discovery was made.

A spokesman for Rogers Animal Hospital said all necessary precautions were taken in isolating the animal in a secure area prior to examination and preparation for analysis. The report received from the state confirmed the positive case.

The dog, 1 and 1/2 years of age, had apparently not received the state-required rabies vaccination. The animal had received its first puppy shots, but never returned for boosters or rabies vaccine. It came from a home with a small child and another animal.

It’s not known whether the dog had been bitten by another animal to contract the disease.

The state is overseeing the proper follow-up care for the residents of the home where the pet came from.

The state of Texas requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age, and on a 1-year or 3-year basis thereafter depending on the type of vaccine used.
