Grapeland woman charged with murder

GRAPELAND — The Houston County Sheriff's Office has charged a Grapeland woman with the murder of her husband.

The Houston County Sheriff's office received a 911 call at 9:33 p.m. Friday in reference to a reported shooting on CR 2310, located south of FM 1272 in Grapeland, according to a news release from Sheriff Darrell Bobbitt.

Houston County Sheriff's Office, Grapeland Police Department and the Grapeland EMS responded to the scene, finding Ernest Bernard, 53, of Grapeland, lying on the living room floor with a single gunshot wound to his face. He was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Clyde Black shortly after the deputies' arrival.

Wife of the deceased, Tina Bernard, 43, of Grapeland, was identified as the suspect. She was taken into custody and charged with murder. Her bond was set at $200,000 and she is still incarcerated at this time.

Three children at the residence at the time of the shooting were brought to the Sheriff's Office, interviewed about the shooting and later released to family members.

Two of the children were under age and the third was 19 years old, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office would not comment on the exact ages of the younger children.

The body was sent to Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to be performed.

Houston County Sheriff's Office declined to comment on the motive and is continuing its investigation.
