DALLAS —  A Dallas judge is trying to give men convicted of domestic violence strong directions and guidance in hopes of modifying their behavior instead of sending them to jail.

State District Judge Rick Magnis presides over a new Dallas program for family violence offenders placed on probation.

Each Friday, five men meet with Magnis and update him on their work and personal lives. Magnis demands that they be on time and follow his orders on probation.

If they don't, he could order them back into jail.

He tells WFAA-TV and The Dallas Morning News that he wants to protect the men's victims above all. He acknowledges that some of these men are in his courtroom because victims wouldn't cooperate with prosecutors, tying authorities' hands at sentencing.
