Gooden to honor former community newswriter in Texas House

ATHENS — Clara Jo Davis spent decades writing about the little old things that were happening in her community.

Now she’s getting honored in arguably the biggest venue the state of Texas has to offer.

Davis, who wrote the Cross Roads News for the Athens Review and other area publications for 30 years, will soon be honored with a resolution in the Texas House of Representatives. The honor was spearheaded by State Rep. Lance Gooden, who represents Henderson County.

A representative with Lance Gooden’s office said the resolution has been written and is ready to be filed. They are just waiting on a date to make everything official.

Davis said the recognition of having a resolution read in her name at the State House is very special to her.

“It is definitely an honor,” Davis said. “I wrote for 30 years and I just couldn’t write anymore.”

Davis wrote about the news in the Cross Roads and Shady Oaks areas during her time as a community news writer. Those writings reflected her passion of food, church and her friends.

Now 85, she lives at South Place Nursing Center in Athens.
