The Athens Review
An Athens resident was able to escape his burning home early Wednesday, but the home was substantially damaged by the flames.
The resident, Floyd W. Vineyard, was not seriously injured, but was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Palestine for treatment.
The Athens Fire Department was investigating the fire on Wednesday afternoon.
Henderson County 9-1-1 received the call reporting the fire at about 8:30 a.m..
The home is located at 839 N. Prairieville Street, next to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Vineyard, 75, reportedly walked out of the house, shortly after discovering the fire, carrying his dog.
“He’s lucky to be alive,” Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Kelly Harris, a friend of Vineyard, said.
Vineyard escaped wearing his robe, but his clothes were damaged or destroyed in the fire.
After learning of the fire, people have responded to help with some of his needs.
The fire appeared to have begun in the den on the right side of the house. Severe damage was reported to the living area of the house, but the two bedrooms were not as extensively damaged.
