Former Packer joins TVCC coaching staff

After record-setting career at Texas A&M, brief NFL stint, Murphy picks up whistle

Terrence Murphy has traded the Frozen Tundra of Green Bay for the warmth of the Cardinals’ nest.

Two years ago, Trinity Valley Community College ’s newest assistant coach was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round. An injury early in the 2005 season forced him to the sidelines.

Now, he’s giving coaching a try.

Murphy, originally from Chapel Hill, is helping to coach TVCC’s wide receivers and kick returners this year. He completed his college career as a a two-time All Big 12 wide receiver at A&M, where he holds the university’s records in career receptions, career receiving yards, career 100-yard games, single season kickoff return yards and single season freshman receptions.

He started all four years at A&M. While in college, he was also named to the All-Academic Big 12 three times.

It was the balance of academics and athletics which made him a good choice for the TVCC staff, said Head Coach Brad Smiley.

“Academics are obviously important to him and he will pass that along. And, since he was elected captain for two years while at A&M he obviously has a high work ethic,” said Smiley.

Murphy is the son of Brenda Guthrie and was born in Tyler . He earned all-district honors while playing quarterback for Chapel Hill

After his injury, Murphy said he spent a year exploring a career in real estate.

“I wanted to explore other things and take a rest from football, but I realized that wasn’t for me,” said Murphy.

Now, he’s glad to be back in the sport, he said. And he’s still involved with the professional club. In between TVCC seasons, he will be an assistant coach at Green Bay .

Murphy also has been involved with Christian groups Brothers Under Christ and Athletes in Action.
