MLK parade entry deadline is Saturday

Athens — The Henderson County Black Rodeo Association is sponsoring the “Dare to Share in the Dream” Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade on  Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m.

Members of the association said their parade will start at the standard parade route around the square.

“We want to bring the families together to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King,” Daryl Graham, media promotion manager for the Henderson County Black Rodeo Association, said.

Graham said city officials and veterans have been invited to the event, along with marching bands, cheerleaders, church groups, while praise dancers will be performing.

“We do not have a final count yet of how many people have registered for the parade,” Graham said.

The parade is for anyone from Athens and Henderson County who would like to participate. The deadline to register is Saturday, Jan. 5.

According to the Chamber of Commerce website, the HCBRA will have a block party to judge the parade entries.

They will also have food, games and prizes at the Fisher High Alumni Building on 910 Needmore St., beginning immediately after the parade. Parade entries will also be judged at that location.

“We would like for everyone to come out and participate, and have a nice time celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr.,” Graham said.
