Shown is a car that ran underneath an empty flatbed on eastbound State Highway 31, about one mile east of Malakoff. State Trooper Samuel Nowell said the car was driving at a normal speed at about 9:30 a.m., when a long trailer rig was attempting to make a U-turn on the center divider. The car’s driver, James Spain, said to be elderly, plowed into the rear of the trailer. Spain was taken by emergency helicopter to East Texas Medical Center Tyler. Nowell said the driver suffered “extreme injuries.” He added that the truck driver, Stephen Page, was not hurt.
